MINNESOTA HISTORICAL SOCIETY:
MN STATE SMART
THEN NOW WOW

In 2011, Tilka Design was selected to create a brand presence for the diverse educational offerings of the Minnesota Historical Society (MHS). Tilka Design created a name: MN State Smart, and then created a versatile family of visual elements to represent MHS's promise to deliver the highest-of-quality educational experience in all products, places and programs associated with the Society.

HANDS ON HISTORY

While the MHS education brand encompasses learners of all ages, the primary goal of our work together was to target educators, parents and students in grades 4–12 and promote the associated site experiences and products for those target markets.

A visual word theme is comprised of three question words plus "MN". To support the concept of "hands on history", word themes are used in conjunction with a photograph of a person holding an artifact. The MN State Smart identity functions as a seal of excellence.

THE MN HISTORY EXHIBIT WHERE KIDS CAN BE KIDS

Then Now Wow—A Minnesota History exhibit was developed at the Minnesota History Museum, supporting the Education brand promise (above) of highest of quality history experiences. Tilka Design created the brand identity and advertising concepts for this 10-year exhibit which opened in 2012. Designed for busy hands and active minds, the exhibit invites visitors to step inside a sod house, plow with oxen, and venture into an underground in a mine!
